Physical Activity Participation

In all of our classes, teachers implement activity breaks throughout the school day. The students are really engaged and the excitement is in the air. Teachers use many songs that are related to the content and also others online music and videos that the children love. We have been implementing this for the past several years along with our FUTP 60 Club on Thursday mornings. The kids just love the club and a time to exercise before school. I wish that we had to personnel to do this every day of the week. Students practically run into the building to get to the club. Fuel Up to Play 60 has made a positive impact at Joanna-Woodson with the focus on healthy eating and physical activity.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Teachers decide what videos and music to use during the activity breaks many times, and other times they allow students to choose the music and videos. We also have students asking to do it every day many more times than we actually do it.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are more attentive by being able to get up and move around during the classes and not just at the end of class or when they are transitioning from one activity to the next. Students seem to be more excited when they come in the school in the mornings and especially on Thursday mornings with FUTP 60 Club.

How did you accomplish your goals?

All teachers are implementing the activity breaks and we have more teachers volunteer this year to assist with our club. We just shared the ideas with the teachers and they saw how much the students loved it. This has encouraged our teachers to do this more and more. It has been very beneficial with our students in special education classes.
