Kids Pick the Breakfast Week

Lisa A Pennington,   Waynesville Middle School
Access to Healthy Foods

After National School Breakfast Week was over, I talked with groups of kids that ate breakfast and asked what were some of their favorite foods. We worked together to find some of their favorites and mixed them with healthy fruits to build a better breakfast menu moving forward for the rest of the year. It worked! We have consistently picked up a few more kids eating every week since then and word of mouth is spreading that we have a healthy breakfast that is good to eat!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We sat down as a group and picked healthy foods that the children would eat.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We stayed in our guidelines and yet managed to get foods that were appealing to the children.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We built a menu for the remainder of the school year and hope to build on it next year as well.
