Koepsell Elementary Student Health Team hosted a Fuel Up to Play Kickoff. The students brainstormed and created a message to promote the importance of healthy eating and being active for 60 minutes every day. They created an “Instant Recess” by pairing physical activity with the song "Let’s Get it Started". The Student Health Team hosted a school-wide assembly where they spoke about the importance of fueling your body with healthy foods and getting 60 minutes of play each day. They then led the entire school in the instant recess. The students recited the Fuel Up to Play 60 pledge and signed the banner that now hangs in the school as a daily reminder of the importance of healthy eating and physical activity.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The Student Health Team worked with their advisor and the principal to plan this activity. They discussed how to launch Fuel Up To Play 60 and wanted to involve the entire school. With the help of the principal, the team planned and implemented the school-wide presentation. The banner hanging in the school serves as a daily reminder for all.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The Instant Recess was a hit with staff and students alike and will be used during the school year to promote physical activity. The Student Health Team was energized by the feedback from staff and is working on more ways to promote Fuel Up To Play 60 this year. They will continue to work on these items at every Health Team meeting.
