Laps for Success

We are an inner city school with 650 students. I introduced my students to "Laps For Success," a running/walking challenge to do laps before school, during recess, or after school. The students record their laps on a monthly tally sheet. At the end of each month, I tally up the sheets and the class that has recorded the most laps wins an extra gym time, which gives the teacher an extra prep period, and the class gets to keep the Gold Sneaker Award in their classroom for the month. For each mile, the students earn an individual sneaker token to wear on a chain.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Getting the students to stay motivated throughout the school year. I now award a sneaker token to each student that completes a mile in gym class and at my afterschool fitness clubs.
