Leadership Within Our Youth!

Keegan Nadon,   William Roberts School
Physical Activity Participation, Student Leadership,  Teamwork
Within our amazing building we have an ECE-8 framework that fosters the absolute best situations for our older students to be superior leaders within our walls. Ramp Up for Recess this year has been our focus for the 7th and 8th graders to support K-5th recess activities.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We created multiple teams that could work within each time frame for recess. We taught exciting new games to the older grades and had them practice teaching each other before heading out to run an entire recess with the younger grades. Accomplishment of our goal has come over hard practice and pure enjoyment of what they got to teach.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Challenges within education happen so often. It was just part of the game. We had to find time for the older students to miss classroom time for the teaching out at recess. To also fully Ramp Up we had to collect many community, building, and teacher resources to clean up and organize our playgrounds. It takes a village and our village is always willing to support healthy lifestyles for our youth.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We will repeat this every single year. Having the older students work with the younger students is one of the most exciting parts of teaching within a ECE-8 model. We want to focus on a new goal every school year, yet making sure that Ramp Up for Recess is a Play that never leaves. Recess is more successful and involves every student when structure, excitement and health is a piece of the pie.
