Lean & Dab Lunch

Physical Activity Participation

During the winter months, it was often too cold to go outside so we began hosting an informal dance club in the one of the teacher's classrooms after lunch.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Student Leadership Team asked one of the teachers if they could dance in her classroom during recess. The teacher agreed to allow 3rd-5th graders to come to the class after lunch to dance under certain conditions. The teacher insisted that students do not do certain dance moves, that they would keep their hands to themselves and play music that was radio friendly. The students agreed.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Students began coming to the classroom everyday to dance during recess. It got a little out of control with how students were leaving the lunchroom. The teachers that were responsible for lunch duty & hall monitoring needed more communication with the classroom teacher to ensure students were in authorized areas. We decided that students would be able to come only on days that the teacher came to the lunchroom to pick them up.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students who participated in the Play acted more like a community.
