Learning about Locally Grown Food
Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassadors visited three different farms. Students learned about the process of growing apples and polishing the apples to get them ready for sale. Our second visit was to a local vegetable farm. Students learned how the producers use the greenhouse to start seeds. The final stop was to a local dairy farm. We were able to watch the milk being made into yogurt. We purchased items at each stop to bring back to the school and teach other students in our school what we have learned.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students worked closely with the Program Advisor to plan taste testing and cooking with the food purchased on our field trip. We worked together to create educational mini-lessons and find ways to reach out to others in our school.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We continue to focus on Farm to School. We are planning taste testing and other activities during the month of April.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are more aware of where their food comes from. They are also interested in learning more about agriculture in Iowa.
