Lewisville Elementary Fuel Up to Play 60 Success Story:  The ongoing process of our success story is to educate our students about the dairy industry with the primary focus on the dairy farmer. We started by asking our students where the milk comes from that they drink for lunch. A kindergarten boy raised his hand and answered “from the cafeteria”. Realizing that many of our students do not know or understand where we really get our milk we decided to change that. We began looking on the internet for videos about dairy farms that we could show to each of our classes. We also use simple information sources such as the Dairy Max farm to fridge poster to help the students better understand the process. That led us to another idea. We thought it would be awesome if our students would write letters to some of our local dairy farmers and thank them for their hard work and dedication to provide us with milk to drink.

We contacted a Dairy Max representative and she thought it was a great idea. She was able to get the names of four north Texas dairy farms. We currently have the students in FUTP 60 Club plus several classes writing thank you letters to these dairy farmers. Dairy Max will have someone come and pick up the letters and deliver them to the farms. We believe it will be very special for the dairy farmers to read these letters written by elementary students. Our hope is to also make four banners each signed by all 800 of our students and have them delivered to these farmers. Our dream would be to take a group of our Fuel Up to Play 60 team to go to one of the farms, get a tour, and personally thank the farmers (and the cows) for all they do.

It is truly a joy to teach our students about the dairy industry and the success is ongoing. The focus of our bulletin board is our Texas dairy farms with reminders for our students to fuel up, play 60 minutes a day, and develop healthy habits they will maintain for a lifetime.

Thank you Dairy Max and the NFL for sponsoring and promoting this great program for our students! Submitted by Jerry Green and Paul Wieczorek Fuel Up to Play 60 coordinators Lewisville Elementary School Lewisville Texas

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We plan on making this Play last throughout the year by encouraging students to eat and drink healthy and continue showing appreciation to local dairy farmers by writing letters.
