Christina Davis, Lindblom Math & Science Academy High School
Access to Healthy Foods
The Lindblom family has been fortunate enough to have purchased vending machines, both food and beverage, in the school. All proceeds benefit Lindblom Athletics. All food/drinks in these vending machines abide by the CPS Health & Wellness Policy. Food options are sold before/after the last lunch period. Drink vending machines are on all day and have no time restrictions.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
With the healthy options for food/drink readily accessible for students/teachers in the school, students actually have an opportunity to eat healthy compared to eating hot chips and pop. These foods are reduced fat, low sugar, zero calorie options that necessarily they may not have at home.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students kept asking about food/drink vending machines in the school. They were hungry/thirsty throughout the day and sometimes missed the opportunity for free breakfast in the AM. Hearing their concern/idea I was able to reach out to a fellow coach in the building who works for a vending machine company. He already knew the CPS requirements which made this process much easier. He wanted to keep the cost down for the students and listened to what they wanted to see in these machines.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Hopefully students take note of what is offered in these vending machines both food/drink. The taste may be different and perhaps the will take this opportunity and bring it home. Perhaps they may enjoy a particular drink/snack in a healthy version compared to basic unhealthy options found at grocery stores.
