Longfellow Hip Hop Dance Club Has Funk

Longfellow Elementary FUTP 60 program ran a seven-week Hip Hip Dance Club. The club danced two times per week for 30 minutes each session. We had a volunteer parent coach our students in the dance moves. This parent is a professional dancer. Mayo High School's dance team also provided support to our HH dancers. We put a routine together and performed at a Mayo Pep Fest and a Rochester Community College volleyball match. A local dance studio provided hip hop t-shirts for each student. We had 88 students participate. The students had a great time dancing and they loved performing in the community.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Our FUTP 60 team is working on the Just Dance Play this school year. We plan to do more dancing in PE classes and also provide another dance club later in the school year.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Our Physical Activity Play is Let's Dance. We provided a club for the students to participate in during the school day and this is why we had such great participation. Our students also like the break from the classroom to come down to the gym.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our goal is to get students moving more during the school day. It was great to provide this club during the school day so all kids could participate. It also provided a creative outlet for students to dance.
