Lunch Recess Success

Jeff Purcell,   George Norris Elementary School
Access to Healthy Foods, Physical Activity Participation,  Other

We used to have recess after lunch every day. This caused students to focus on recess instead of eating their lunch. Kids were throwing away tons and tons of food so that it would look like they were done eating, in order to go outside for a recess.  To combat this, we switched lunch recess to before lunch, allowing the students to expend some energy before coming in to eat. We have seen more students finishing their lunches and also have had a decrease in behavior problems around the lunch hour.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This is going to become a yearly change to our lunch recess planning.
