Lunch Time is Active Time

The FUTP 60 Leadership Team at La Quinta Middle School has been extra busy making sure numerous activity opportunities are available to keep students moving both before school and during lunch. They have already run a lunchtime intramural tournament in whiffle ball and are currently running a flag football tournament. This includes organizing teams, setting up the schedule, managing equipment, and refereeing the games. When they aren't working with the tournaments, they are busy checking out equipment, monitoring activities, serving smoothies, or taking care of the school garden. With the FUTP 60 Team at La Quinta Middle School, there is never a moment to rest.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Our FUTP 60 team will continue to run round robin tournaments throughout the year. Each tournament runs about five weeks. As soon as one sport is finished, students are already preparing their teams for the next sport.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our students are always moving, playing, and having a good time during lunch. This environment has eliminated mischief. It's amazing.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students run the tournament and of course are the participants. However, teachers and staff also support the program by lending their names and support to the teams, which creates friendly rivalries among staff.
