For the past several months, our staff, students and their families have been participating in a variety of physical activities outside of the school day. For example, once a month, we participate in a local 5k run. Most recently, we participated in the “Hearts and Minds” 5k sponsored by the Corpus Christi Education Foundation. We had over 40 participants and everyone had a great time. Our numbers keep growing; we currently have 30 runners signed up for our next run which is a week away.
Another popular event is our “Mustang Tennis Night.” This is held twice a year at the HEB Tennis Center. Students and staff members team up to play “Doubles” for a night of friendly competition. This has proven to be very successful and have even teamed up with another nearby campus to play against their school. Students are always excited to see which staff member they will be teaming up with. We are thinking about including parents at our next outing.
In addition, we are currently in the “discussion” stages of yet another physical activity for staff, students and their families. We hope to host our first “Volleyball Night” within the next two months. Teams will be made up of staff, students and parents for a friendly game of volleyball under the stars. We hope to get 6 teams signed up and have a small tournament.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
We have seen students really want to participate in these special events. As teachers, we know which students have parents/grandparents that are involved and which do not. We try to be mentors to all students but especially for those that do not have parental involvement. This is why combining staff and students on a team has really made a positive impact.
