Thanks to Fuel Up To Play 60, we were able to participate in the Nike Marathon Kids program. At Stanley Elementary we are very close to 100% success with this program for grades 4 and 5! This is a highly motivating program where students earn incentives for every marathon they complete. One student has completed her 2nd marathon as of today! It is such a terrific program, one of my students accumulated 6,000 steps in one 45 minute class period!
How did you accomplish your goals?
I purchased pedometers that hook up to my computer. It takes 2-3 seconds for students to put their pedometer into the pedometer reader. Their total steps are recorded on my computer and it is super easy to keep track of their steps and award prizes as they are earned for each marathon completed!
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
I will continue this Play until the end of the school year. Students are so excited. The Marathon Kids program really sells itself. If I run out of prizes, students will be excited to see their name/picture on the bulletin board as completing additional marathons.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The challenge was to get the slow, unmotivated students involved and excited about the program. Once students started completing marathons and receiving awards, the slower students began to care and become more active in class so that they too could earn prizes and get their picture on the bulletin board.
