Walk this Way — Start a Walking Club
We started a before school Marvista Mile Club, where students come a 1/2 hour before they Fuel Up with breakfast at 9 AM. We meet on the track and students earn charms for jogging or walking each mile ( three laps on our track) they complete. It is a nice outdoor spring time acitivity to help get our 60 minutes of physical activity. During the winter, we opened up the gym before school for students to work on our current PE skills. Students loved the opportunity to start getting exercise before school, instead of waiting in a cold line outside.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our FUTP 60 Student Ambassador team members were great about coming to meetings and enthusiastically spreading the word at lunch. We did got caught drinking milk breakfasts and lunches and they promoted our Marvista Mile Club at lunch to get kids excited to participate.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

I presented to my PTA to get them on board with supporting our after school programs we created to give students the opportunity to 60 minutes of physical activity.. We did an after school circus club, had 4 softball teams, and 4 volleyball teams. Now that we set those up, I asked the PTA to create a chairperson position to handle logistics next year and in the future.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

I have seen that if you give students the opportunity to participate in sports, they will enthusiastically take you up on the offer. We didn't have any students playing volleyball or softball before and now kids love to play.
