Meadow Lane Girls Run

A team of fifth- and sixth-grade girls from Meadow Lane Elementary recently completed a metro-area dcMLEgirlsOnRun5K race as part of the National Girls on the Run program. The girls, accompanied by teachers Becky Mallen, Christina Meachum, and Diane Keeney, and school counselor Deanna Walter, trained for 10 weeks in preparation for the Girls on the Run 5K, held Nov. 21 at Arrowhead Stadium. Girls on the Run focuses on physical fitness and also includes lessons that build confidence and self-esteem, prevent bullying, and address peer pressure.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Several teachers were interested in this program and since the run took place at Arrowhead, they chose the upper grades. They helped train the girls and get ready for the big event.
