Our school joined a city collaboration with Medical City Hospital for a 21 day challenge. The challenge was to give up junk food and eat healthy snacks instead. Medical City provided each student with a cook book created by other students full of healthy snacks. As a school, we discussed the challenge daily, kept each other accountable and discussed the benefits of eating healthy snacks instead of junk food. Many students offered new snacks they tried and we voted on our favorite healthy choices. The challenge created fantastic dialogue for students and their families and was a huge success, bringing awareness of the amount of junk food we were eating and how that made us feel compared to eating a healthy alternative.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
We think before we snack! It made us think twice before grabbing snacks full of sugar.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students went home with their cook books and talked with families about taking the challenge with them. Families discussed healthier options for snacks and worked together to make healthier choices.
