Mentoring Many Mini-Mes
I am a very heavy person who currently takes Metformin and other medications for obesity, diabetes and heart disease. I am very unhappy most of the time. I wanted something to change my life. I looked for help from adults. Mr.Thomas, a teacher at my school, encouraged me to help myself and be a mentor at the same time. It made me happy that I could help myself and others at the same time. I started a Healthy Lifestyle Club with kids from our middle school. They looked up to me as a role model. It was great!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

I made different students leaders of the team after several weeks. I selected them based on their leadership skills, enthusiasm and dedication to the project. I rotated the leaders each week. Students got special t-shirts I created to show they were true leaders of the project. The younger kids loved helping organize the activities.
