Access to Healthy Foods, Student Leadership, Success with Funds
Using the grant funds the OMS Fuel to Play 60 Team used recipes from the Dairy Alliance to give smoothie samples at lunch. The team approached the principal with their idea to promote healthy eating and received approval. The students answered questions from their peers on the smoothies. The team received feedback from their peers and gave new smoothies based upon feedback the next month.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
I (the teacher) provided the website with the recipes and materials, but students measured the materials and passed out the samples at lunch. They set up the equipment and answered questions from their peers.
How did you accomplish your goals?
The team wanted to increase healthy options at school. We used the Dairy Alliance to find recipes to increase milk consumption and healthy choices. Based on the feedback the team received, the majority of students liked the smoothies.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The team applied for a grant with Fuel Up to Play 60 and received funds for this year. The team purchased 2 blenders and a cooler to store the materials. The PTA is focused on increasing student's wellness and has offered their support in the future.
