Access to Healthy Foods, Physical Activity Participation
Our principal, with a little convincing, allowed our students to participate in RECESS prior to lunch. The motivation behind the idea was to encourage students to eat/drink more of the healthy food offered in the cafeteria at the same time benefiting our physical education program (Fitnessgram) by having students be physically active during recess. In turn, students were certainly hungrier and thirstier going to lunch and the end result was empty milk bottles and cleaner plates.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Our challenge was "How can we have all students wash hands prior to eating?" The solution was a simple one. Our cafeteria manager offered disposable moist towelettes as the students entered the lunch line. Problem solved!
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Certainly our consumption of milk has increased drastically and less waste of food is evident at the end of lunch.
