Community Involvement

The Minnesota Department of Health posted a success story on their webpage about Longfellow in Rochester, MN. Our school, has a partnership with SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Program) and FUTP 60 to bring fitness and healthy eating to our school. The SHIP grant got our garden started and it continues through the efforts of many in our school. The SHIP grant was also written to get our school bikes to ride during PE class. This was a join effort between Longfellow and Riverside. The FUTP 60 grant has provided farm tours.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

This has been a joint effort from many in our community and our school. The partnership includes: Olmsted County health, LF garden team, Fuel up to Play 60, Midwest Dairy, Local dairy farmers, FUTP 60 student leadership team, School administration, and the FUTP 60 advisor. With all these groups working together to help get kids more active and teach them about gardening and healthy lifestyle, many great things are happening at Longfellow. Giving our kids lifelong opportunities.
