More MVPA for every student, every day!
We were awarded a grant from Marathon Kids and started a running club for all of our 4th graders. We were the first school in Katy ISD to implement the Marathon Kids program.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our students and staff really worked together as a team to get students motivated to run. We had student running miles during physical education classes and then got to reward students with cool Nike prizes when they finished their 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th marathon. Students were really responsible about reporting their miles and encouraged each other to get more active.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I wrote a grant to Marathon Kids in January. We were one of only 100 schools in the US picked for the grant. We had enormous support from our grant department in Katy ISD, and our school administrators to accomplish our goals this season. They helped us with our grant proposal and the health and physical education department was very supportive as well. We we awarded a grant so that every boy and girl in 4th grade could participate in the program free of charge.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We plan to include Marathon Kids in our physical education curriculum next year and for many seasons to come. Students were so responsive to the program and were so excited to get out and run their miles. I had students report that they were running at home with Mom or Dad or older brothers or sisters. It really is a community program because it brings our whole community together and makes everyone healthier and more active.
