More than the Miles

Bethany Burton,   Lake Windward Elementary School
Physical Activity Participation,  Teamwork

During PE, a pedometer challenge gets the students moving more. Every day the students get their pedometer and immediately start moving! During class the students are constantly moving their feet. At the end of class students download their pedometers and add it to their total steps. Then their grade level hiker is moved to the next mileage marker. The students cannot wait to see how far they hiked that day or which grade level is in the lead. The pedometers keep track of individual miles and grade level miles.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Since our Play goes beyond individually achieving 100 miles, students will not become unmotivated once they achieve the 100 miles. They can continue to contribute to the grade level's goal of "hiking" all 50 states.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Creating a plan for students to get their pedometers, wear them correctly, download them, and put them away each class was challenging. By creating an efficient system, the students and teachers have been successful.
