Every morning our students meet as a class to eat breakfast and discuss common core values like perseverance, empathy, gratitude, and grit. The Fuel Up to Play 60 students health leaders felt that this time would be great to share research about the importance and benefits of incorporating more brain breaks throughout the day. They researched articles and cited evidence they felt would be good information for the teachers. Then they wrote scripts to share with the classes. We videotaped some of their speeches so teachers could also play them again if they wanted to. Our goal was to share this information and give teachers research about how brain breaks can actually help students do better in school. This has encouraged them to make it a priority to increase the amount of brain breaks they have in their classrooms.
How did you accomplish your goals?
After deciding that we wanted to increase the amount of brain breaks throughout the day, we wanted to provide research to let teachers know why we wanted to do this. The students researched articles to find the best evidence to use and presented that to the teachers and the students.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We hope that teachers will see the difference and make it a normal part of their day.
