Motivate to Dominate

Barry Russell,   Midland H S
Physical Activity Participation

When we started Fuel Up to Play 60, we focused on the Physical Activity Plays to start up, following the Healthy Eating Plays. We mixed up our daily physical activity Plays. From the 100 mile club, to boot camp, to self resistance exercises, we tried to motivate the kids in all kinds of different ways to live a healthy lifestyle. Our star story came when we had a girl come up and proclaim that she had "lost 18 pounds" since we had started. This turned our motivation into dominating the healthy lifestyle challenge. By this one student's success and story, other students continued to push through and motivated themselves to keep pushing harder. We continue to work hard at being physically active, but also to follow that up with discussing healthy eating options.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Getting everyone on board in the high schools is always a challenge; with great student leaders we were able to achieve success.

How did you accomplish your goals?

But giving the students a variety of options to complete their challenges.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We will continue to help motivate and dominate our students to help achieve their healthy lifestyle goals by giving them the tools and information that can help them now and in their futures.
