Move and Chill

Howe Elementary teamed up with the school Parent-Teacher Community (PTC) for a fun night of activity and relaxation. Families were invited to the gym (moved from outside due to weather) for an obstacle course/walk. Parents and students participated in a series of warm-up stretches and then eight stations consisting of hula hoop agility hop, dancing, jumping jacks, nutrition quizzes, relaxation-yoga, and water quiz stations. Families were given samples of various cheeses and flavored milks, received participation ribbons, and four lucky families won a family activity game to take home. After completing the gym events, families were invited into the cafeteria for a popcorn and movie night.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students and adults planned this event and then everyone worked to make it happen. Everyone helped at the event in some capacity from beginning to end.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Our biggest challenge was space, thanks to the weather. We had the area outside our school planned out for the obstacle course. When we had to move the event indoors, we had to change. Everyone went through the course and completed the event.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We would like to plan another community event. We are hoping that what the students learned at the various stations' nutrition quizzes and activity will help them think about the choices they make throughout the rest of the school year and beyond.
