McGrath students were able to combine their music and physical education classes every other Friday to have a 60 minute block where they were exposed to movement and music combined. Students were able to learn new skills like line dancing, square dancing, movement with rhythm, dancing in a group, and following dance videos. Students learned different dance moves and were able to create their own dances as well. We were also able to utilize the Jump With Jill music videos and even had their show come out to our school!
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Adults first started teaching different movement patterns to the students. With instruction and practice the students became responsible for their own learning. Classroom teachers were able to use some of this in their classroom as brain breaks because the students wanted their classroom teachers to see what they were learning in their combine physical activity/music class.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We were able to combine our music and physical education classes which allowed us the time to teach full lessons to the students. This was something outside of our curriculum that has not been done in our building at the students jumped on board. Every other Friday students were given a chance to do this. They had some input for types of things they wanted to learn along the way. As they started learning different dances and rhythms they were able to help each other and create moves and dances.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We have most of the equipment that we need for this Play, so we will just continue to combine music and physical education classes regularly. The students really love it, so we will continue to use it!
