Our school really got moving with Physical Activity Breaks in the classroom. Teachers throughout the school were challenged to get their kids moving during the school day. Mrs. W, the PE teacher, gave each class sets of exercises to complete throughout the day. Each time a class completed a set of exercises, that classroom received points. Teachers would then come and place on their scorecard the amount of points each class received that day. There was lots of competition throughout the school in order to get these kids moving!
How did you accomplish your goals?
In order to accomplish this goal of getting more kids active throughout the day, I placed score cards up for each classroom. As students walked to lunch throughout the month of March, they could see how many points their class had earned. This also encourages the teachers to get more active with their students. What an increase in physical activity we have seen due to the monthly March physical activity competition.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
I intend to continue this monthly competition in order to keep kids active. This monthly competition also encourages teachers to give their kids a brain break in between subject areas. The score cards that are placed in the hallway outside the gym will continue to stay up throughout each month in order for students to see their progress.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
One of the challenges I continue to face is the dilemma of getting all teachers on board in giving their students a brain break/physical activity break. I feel the score card and making monthly announcements of the winners will definitely encourage teachers to get more involved in this Play. Another way I think I could overcome this challenge is giving classroom incentives, for example: I could give an extra PE class to the class that wins each month.
