Mustang Walking Program
During this school year, we initiated our Mustang Walking Club. Each day, our students have the opportunity to go outside and start the morning with active walking for 25 minutes. We have a course of 200 meters and every time they complete a lap they receive an incentive stick. Our students are very excited and come out everyClub receive a tennis shoe key chain. The program has been a total success! Kids love to come out early in the morning and spend time with their friends walking and talking. Most importantly, students are becoming active before their school day begins.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Our challenge has been keeping track of how many laps the students are walking. We improved the process by reminding the students to bring their incentive sticks to their health fitness class. They come to the HF office and we collect their sticks and keep track of their laps on a spreadsheet.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

When the students arrive to their classrooms after the morning walk, they are more alert, attentive and receptive to learning. They also feel very happy and proud when they see their picture on the wall, which encourages others to participate.
