Access to Healthy Foods, Student Leadership, Success with Funds,  Teamwork

This is one of four tastings using funding for the Healthy Foods Everywhere in School Play. Our student team worked alongside of our district food service director to come up with a "mystery ingredient" smoothie with a fall focus. The student team served smoothies during lunch and challenged peers to guess the ingredients. The smoothies were well received but few students could figure out the fresh cranberries in them!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students worked with the foodservice director to figure out fall foods that could be used in smoothies. They shared ideas and the director perfected the recipe. She mixed the smoothies, and they served them.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Communication with lunch room staff on potential allergens. We were trying to keep ingredients secret and they kept pressuring for them. In the end, dairy was the only potential allergen used.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We used our Vitamix blender purchased with past Fuel Up to Play 60 funding. All teachers were given samples. We have had several teachers request to use this for class parties.
