National Chocolate Milk Celebration at Granville Middle

Barbara Blater,   Granville Middle School
Access to Healthy Foods
The activities were planned and conducted by the FUTP 60 members at GMS during lunches for the whole school. We had a BOGO from the cafeteria on chocolate milk. Students received stickers for drinking chocolate milk, were entered into a raffle if they bought milk and received prizes. We did a chocolate milk cheer and rap. The rap talked about the benefits of drinking milk. There was a milk drinking contest with prizes. Also we made a display to explain the different caffeine and nutrient contents of milk and/or dairy foods offered at lunch. Students who bought chocolate milk came forward for a picture taking session with their raised cartons. Announcements for parents and students were made before the National Chocolate Milk Day events to get more participation.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

They practiced the cheer and rap and took responsibility for helping plan and conduct events

How did you accomplish your goals?

The student body enjoyed the activities and learned about why the OHSSA has chocolate milk as their drink of choice. In family and consumer sciences class, we are viewing and discussing the Learning Zone Xpress video on "Obesity in a Bottle" to supplement the Nat'l Choc Milk Day

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Getting students' attention during lunch is difficult
