NCSU Mascot Joins Fuel Up to Play 60 Kickoff Event

Earlier this month, we kicked off our 100 Mile Club Play with a visit from NC State University mascot Mrs. Wuf. Students wrote a script to introduce their peers to the 100 Mile challenge while parent volunteers and teachers passed out pedometers donated by the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association to each of the students. Even Mrs. Wuf made a fashion statement wearing her FUTP 60 pedometer (pictured below). One of our student clubs, the One Health Club, designed an app available on Google Play where students have been logging their steps and are encouraged to track their dairy intake daily. Students unable to download the app can input their steps using the student-designed website, pawprintspedometer.weebly.com. During the fourth quarter of the year, students will compete with the teachers to see who can walk the most steps in a quarter. In May, we will have a school-wide celebration recognizing those students and teachers who have joined the 100 Mile Club.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students collaborated with the parent volunteers and teachers to design an app and website to track the students' steps.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are posting a Leader Board in the front of the school recognizing those students who walk and log the most steps on a weekly basis, using incentives (prizes) for every 50,000 steps students walk and have a recognition event planned in May.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was the pedometers themselves and students misusing them. To overcome this challenge, two of our students made a funny video to encourage students to use the pedometers correctly and efficiently.
