We are a new school for students in grade 4-6. Our school Fuel Up to Play 60 Team brainstormed ideas for games and equipment that could be added to our playground to increase students participation to our outdoor recess experience. We are adding corn hole style games to our blacktop that can be played once the snow disappears from our upper New York State playground. We are also going to add new equipment to our limited bucket of sports equipment during daily recess, when the weather is acceptable.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students brainstormed ideas and they were written down. The Fuel up to Play 60 advisor met with the school principal about the ideas. Our wonderfully supportive principal gave us support and a thumbs up to get the job done.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
To create permant corn hole style courts that are spray painted onto the black top. It was a low budget option that did not require storage space and got a ton of students involved. It was something they never played at school before. This was an exciting opportunity for students.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
More kids active, fewer behavior problems.
