We successfully began our new walking club today. After deciding two days ago to make this our activity plan in Fuel UpP to Play 60, we got the wheels turning quickly to make it happen. Permission was sought and obtained to begin the club, flyers were distributed promoting the club, a PA announcement was made and it became a reality today.
Students arriving at school generally sit or stand in the gym or sit in the cafeteria. There is typically no physical activity happening. In addition, students have limited activity during the day. Physical education is not a requirement, students are not allowed to go outside after lunch and the only regular scheduled physical outlet is 10-15 minutes time in the gym after lunch. It seemed prudent to offer a chance for students to build some activity into their day to help them lead a healthier life. We believe the foundation is being laid that will motivate students to continue walking beyond the school year. We decided to open the walking club up to all staff members as well. An email was sent inviting all staff to join in. Before the email was even sent four teachers were walking on the first day!
Here is how the first day unfolded. One teacher started walking before the students arrived. The first students who filed into the gym after their buses began arriving declined the invitation to walk. Then suddenly, one student joined in. As more teachers and students began walking even more students started walking. Each person used their own persuasive skills to entice other students onto the gym floor to get moving. This was a great beginning for a small school with around 200 students! Success begins with an idea that can really explode into something great when we work together for a cause. We are off to a great start!
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
In the future, we plan to continue having the walking club. We hope to offer many incentives to the kids for participating and greatly promote the club.
