Nutrition plus Fitness equals Wellness
We have a wellness grant for fitness and nutrition this year so our school is involved in students making and providing after school snacks. We will have a weeklong instruction class on cross country skiing so all kids will get to do this for PE and an activity for after school. With our funding I have purchased four nutrition games involving the Choose My Plate concepts of healthy eating. Our district hopes to get Nick Hansen, Alaska's Ninja Warrior, to come to our district next semester to encourage kids to take up a routine of physical fitness. Also in the spring we will have an opportunity to participate in a mini-Iditarod with kids mushing a one-dog team.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

More students are eating the fruits served at both meals and some are trying vegetables they swore they would never eat. Several kids who did not like PE last year are showing much more interest this year.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Because we have grant funding, we are receiving more outdoor equipment we can use until April or May. Our snow hangs around until school is out so we can do our cross country skiing once it snows in late October.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

When we adults demonstrate we will eat things we don't really like, some kids realize they should at least try unknown foods.
