Every year, our school participates in the Morning Mile club, run by PTA members and parents. The participants meet in the morning before school, and their goal is to reach 100 miles before the school year is over. Several students are on their way to reaching the 100 mile mark. This is such a good way to create a healthy habit of starting the day with exercise, that will hopefully continue throughout adulthood.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I have noticed kids are feeling better in the morning, and are not starting their days with video games and electronics. The teachers notice better focus from these students, and many of them are very proud of their accomplishments.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students and adults work together by encouraging each other. The parents encourage the kids as they run, and promote the importance of exercise.
How did you accomplish your goals?
The parents pass out straws each time a student completes a lap. They keep track of laps, and calculate them into miles. Each time students reach a goal, they get a sneaker bead. They meet in the morning before school, weather permitting.
