PAWSabilities are Endless!
Kostoryz Tigers accomplished our trifecta with the Play Farm to School by having a school garden, nutrition classes, and Molly the Milking Cow. Our students and their families took advantage of the community partners to help them learn about healthier eating choices and learning where their food comes from. During PE and other classes, students worked extra hard on assignments to be given the opportunity to work in the garden. Students planted tomatoes, cauliflower, zucchini, bell peppers, radishes, carrots, and lettuce. They were tasked with the watering, weeding, and picking. They were able to see the process form seed, to plant, to table. Nutrition classes were taught during PE. Students learned the importance of healthy eating and exercise. They were given the chance to sample a variety of items from the different food groups. Many were surprised that they actually enjoyed the new foods and asked for them at home. Students were able to take home what they learned at school and share their knowledge with family members. Students were visited by a special guest. Molly the Jersey cow from the Southwest Dairy Farmers mobile classroom astonished the younger students by demonstrating the milking process. Students learned that their milk came from cows on a farm and not their local grocery store. The Kostoryz students have gained an appreciation of the hard work that farmers do daily. The students are already looking forward to next year!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The students are excited about eating healthy and experiencing unfamiliar foods. They enjoy going home and sharing their knowledge of new foods being introduced in the nutrition classes. The students of this generation are rapidly becoming the educator of the older generation.
