Physical Activity Participation, Success with Funds
Utilizing the money we received from FUTP 60 last year, we purchased pedometers for our PE classes. We used this equipment to start a school-wide pedometer program for our 2016-2017 7th and 8th grade students. The students have been recording their steps throughout the week and documenting their progress. The goal is for each student to reach 100 miles by March 26th, 2017, which is the date of our Field Day.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
We have seen this technology motivate our students through the means of competition and self-improvement. The students have been making a conscious effort to stay physically active both in and outside of school.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The P.E. staff have been making daily announcements regarding the pedometer program and what it entails. A Google doc was created in order for students to log their steps. The students are responsible for documenting their progress, checking out the pedometers, and returning them when necessary.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The students are aware that the overall goal is to reach 100 miles. They have continued to use the equipment throughout the course of the year in hopes of reaching this goal. Teachers are challenging students through step competitions between P.E. classes and grade levels.
