At Quaker Valley Middle School we do not call it recess - instead we call it Period X. Period X occurs the last 30 minutes of each day. It is a time for students to get involved in an activity of their choice. The FUTP 60 Team organized a series of physical activities for students to participate in. They selected the activities according to a student survey. What they came up with was a list of physical activity offerings for each quarter. First quarter the team promoted, organized, and implemented the "Capture the Flag" tournament during Period X. This quarter they are organizing a "speedball" tournament. This has been unbelievably successful.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

They set up the teams, brackets, and organized the field on a regular basis. The activity was student-implemented and educator-facilitated. Not only did the team implement and organize, they also participated.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The team has created a list of the top four physical activities from their school survey. They plan on offering an activity per quarter.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was equipment and space. The team had to put a cap on the number of participants. The best method for this was to allow equal openings for each grade level so that all grades were represented.
