Physical Activity is the Key to Success!

"Go the Distance With 10 Minutes of Fitness." Our Supervisor of Health and Physical Education, Mr. Kevin Alvine, developed "10 Minutes of Fitness" a few years ago to implement and increase students' physical activity during Physical Education. Students work together to be better, not only physically, but also on other characteristics needed in the future, such as communication, determination, and motivation. Here at West Orange HS, we try to encourage the students to try their very best at all times. We try to incorporate different activities daily so that it does not become repetitive and the students are engaged at all times. Our "10 Minutes of Fitness" is set up with different stations every day at the start of every Physical Education class. Another way we try to engage and motivate our students is by playing music during "10 Minutes of Fitness". Students also input their daily/marking period scores on the Daily Fit Log to keep track of their progress.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

"10 Minutes of Fitness" has been a success for the three years that we have had it in our district. The students are hooked and engaged at all times. They are motivated to do better. We do fitness testing using Daily Fit Log so students can keep track of their progress.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Checking students' Daily Fit Log shows us how active our students are being not only during school but after school as well. In addition, we have fitness testing at the beginning of the marking period, so that students can see how they have improved in just a few months.
