Planting the Adrian FFA Orchard

In March we were finally able to purchase the fruit trees for the Adrian FFA Orchard! We had to wait until then as it is critical as to when you can plant fruit trees in our area. The ground was worked and prepped by a local farmer. Adrian Shop students helped to measure, mark and dig the holes for the trees. Adrian 6th grade students helped to plant the trees and watered them to give them a good start. There are five apple and five peach trees with three different varieties of each. The young trees all bloomed and have set fruit! It will be exciting to watch the trees and the fruit grow over the summer!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Once the fruit trees are established they should produce fruit every year. Various members with the FFA will be responsible for the summer maintenance and care of the trees. The Plant Production class will be responsible for annual pruning and care during the school year. The fruit collected will be served in the school cafeteria and being the orchard is on school grounds, students will be able to see how their food is raised and may even help with the harvest of the fruit.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

In establishing the Adrian FFA orchard we reached out to local experts as to what and how to plant. We had a member from a local seed warehouse come and visit the site and she gave recommendations on what varieties to plant, where to plant them and even how to plant them. This expertise what critical to successfully establishing our orchard. A local farmer, who serves as the Chairmen of the Adrian Ag Advisory helped by working the ground in preparation for planting the fruit trees.

How did you accomplish your goals?

With the help and input of several individuals and of course the students in the Adrian Ag classes, we got the orchard established. It took a lot of man power, time and effort but the result will be worth it! We should have producing fruit trees for years and years to come!
