Pleasant Lea Middle School's Mission Nutrition
It is always difficult to get Middle School students to eat fruits and vegetables. We have worked hard to give a large variety daily from fresh, frozen and canned products. If a student can't find sides they like, then they are too picky and hard to please. The staff does a great job of keeping the side choices full so the first student has the same choices as the last student that comes through the line. Since we have both the Royals (Blue) and the Chiefs (Red) we use gelatin to color some of our fruits for spirit days. Its amazing how applesauce, sliced apples and diced pears look with a little gelatin powder sprinkled in. Students love it!! The manager talks with students as they go through, reminding them to pick up their fruit or vegetable and challenges them to eat everything on their tray. They all love Ms. Stacey--she is a great role model for the students of PLMS.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

We had lots of waste the last few years with the new regulations. With the manager reminding the students to take only what they eat and going around while they are eating and talking with them, we have seen lots less food go in the trash can. We also encourage students to give their whole fruit or packaged items to someone who is still hungry if they are not going to eat it themselves.
