Physical Activity Participation, Student Leadership, Success with Funds
We recently started using rip sticks as part of the pound workout program. Students workout to a song using drum sticks. It gets them moving while enjoying music. It is great to use in the classroom on a rainy day. I have 5th graders on the SWAT team who have been able to take on the leadership role and teach other students. We work out to one song or two, depending on how much time we have. It is fun and energizing. Teachers and students have both shared how much they enjoy it.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
I first showed 5th graders how to use the rip sticks and after they felt comfortable, they showed other grade levels.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
A challenge we had was not having any choreography to follow. After we searched on YouTube, we found a few. My goal is for students to create their own choreography.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We got the idea from a Student Summit last year. The AZ dairy council brought in an amazing presenter who demonstrated the program for us. We took that idea, used funding and brought it to our school.
