Our aftercare program (ages 3-5) has the unique opportunity to serve almost half (45%) of our student population. With this, we are able to promote healthy choices and exercise with all of our children through guided games, structured, and free play. Coach H, our PE teacher, works with the students for 25 minutes daily. His goal is to make sure we are fit and healthy. The same activities that are used in PE are used during our recess time. During the aftercare program, around 3:30, we have a daily healthy snack. Afterwards we go to recess (outside, weather permitting) or into the gym. We encourage the students to run, play games, and be active for a minimum of 60 minutes. We now have a volunteer from the high school, Coach S, who will be coming two days a week to work with the students on different physical education activities. His plans are to invite his off-season track team members to assist as well. Our chant: “We can run. We can play. We get our 60 every day!”

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our average daily attendance has risen from 75%-80% with our students. They want to stay every day and they don't want to leave when their parents get here.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Our aftercare program is located in the school. Our workers are school employees. We are able to see what the PE teacher is working on and we are able to reinforce it during recess.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Our challenge is always is budget. We have the good fortune of having two volunteers who enjoy helping out and being around the students.
