Once a month we utilize the Fresh from Florida Harvest of the Month and create a quick and simple healthy recipe from the fruit or vegetable. We let the students sample the recipe and we give them a handout on the health benefits of eating the particular fruit or vegetable and we will also give them the recipe.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We identified the Fresh from Florida Harvest of the Month and the students looked for simple recipes to create with the fruit or vegetable. In the photo, the harvest of the month was tomatoes and we made an easy salsa. During the demonstration, we would put all the ingredients in a food processor and blend them together in front of the students. They loved the salsa and we would also talk to them about the health benefits of eating tomatoes.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We work closely with a local farm "long and scott farms", who delivers to our school fresh fruit and vegetables twice a year and we run a mini farmer's market.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge we face is being able to create a recipe within the constraints of a 30 minute lunch and to be able to distribute samples of the recipe.
