Access to Healthy Foods

Mary A White Elementary has one main PTA fundraiser each spring, the Race for Education. The entire school takes pledges based on how many laps they may walk. This year they raised over $15000 being active! In the past, they have offered sweets and treats, but this year the PTA approached Mr. Przystas (FUTP 60 advisor) and Mrs. Stone (district food service director) about offering smoothies as a healthy treat. Fuel Up to Play 60 leaders helped pour and serve smoothies in shifts throughout the event. This was a huge success!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Student leaders were right in the prep area pouring and serving smoothies. They coordinated how to get them in/out of the building and communicated with PTA on timing.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We believe this is not an expectation for the Race for Education, not a treat!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students liked them and are still talking about it!
