Race for the Future for Westview

Race for the Future is a 5K run/walk open to the community that benefits the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation and the Carrie Foresee Memorial Scholarship Fund. Many area elementary, middle, and high schools worked to raise awareness by participating in running clubs after school to prepare for the 5K run/walk. The students in the running clubs got to practice leadership through leading pre-run stretches and runs. Total proceeds over the race's 19-year history are close to $375,000. The popular metro-area event is held at Lee's Summit West High School. A photo gallery and race results are available here. Westview Elementary School had a wonderful showing with 21 percent participation. They were the second highest in attendance for the schools.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Every year it's hard to get the students and families to attend the 5K walk/run. While the attendance is great for the run club, many families have conflicts over the weekend. We got the date out and really pushed the run.
