After receiving our amazing goods, our students have really had some great times in recess. I was able to buy goals for soccer, give out extra basketballs, playground balls, hula hoops and jump ropes. Our students are now able to play games with the new equipment rather than just playing tag or kicking an old ball between two fence posts.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I have seen students become more excited about going to recess daily. Our students only receive 10 minutes of recess daily, so that limited amount of time is very special to them! Now that we have soccer goals, basketballs, playground balls and jump ropes for them to use whenever they wish, they have gotten to play more games! Our students have never been able to play basketball prior to this grant because our basketballs were all warped. Now, we have enough basketballs for each grade level.
How did you accomplish your goals?
After thoroughly researching what types of equipment the students would like for "free play," we decided on the true basics. Basketballs, playground balls, jump ropes and soccer goals to add to the equipment that we already have has helped tremendously! We even received an "Egg Beater" from Nasco that the kids love to use. Having the kids' input was truly helpful in reaching our goals!
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
This Play is a fairly easy one to utilize for years to come. When you purchase good, quality equipment it is easy to stretch the time limit on it. Also, helping the grade level teachers learn new games and how to use the equipment helps it last. We have a Marathon Kids club right now and the students have already asked if we could start a soccer club in the fall. Because of this equipment, we will be able to have a soccer club, basketball club, and even a cricket club if wanted!
