We had a Registered Dietician come and speak to our high school Personal Fitness classes about how overall wellness affects brain function, how portions have increased the past 20 years, along with the increase in obesity. Students participated in a hands-on demonstration of portioning cereal into a variety of bowl sizes and evaluated how the bowl size affected the portion size. They also learned just how much sugar has been added to everyday foods and beverages. The main emphasis was on choosing nutrient-dense foods and keeping active every day.

How did you accomplish your goals?

As a PE teacher, I really wanted my students to realize what a big impact their daily nutrition choices make on their overall wellbeing. Many of my students were amazed by the demonstrations provided by the Registered Dietician!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students were put into groups for the experimentation of cereal and portion sizes. Students had several minutes to decide how much cereal they would consume on an average day and pour it into the bowl.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Since the Registered Dietician has been in, students have been turning in a food diary at least every few weeks now to see if we can see trends in their eating habits and correct the ones that stand out the most.
