Riverdale Ag Day

Our annual Ag Day was held on August 31st this year and despite some less than ideal weather conditions, was a repeat success! The day joins together members of our rural farming community with our elementary students. Area farmers brought in their equipment, livestock and knowledge to teach our students about where their food comes from. Students were able to interact with animals and equipment. Our local newspaper did a fantastic write up of the event:

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We worked with our high school FFA students (Future Farmers of America) to help educate students about farm safety. The FFA students worked to present alongside our local farmers at each station.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students have an understanding of the amount of time and labor that it takes to get the crop from the field or animal to their plate. We had a Dairy Farmer here and students left with a complete understanding of the milking process. For students to know and appreciate how hard our farmers work to feed everyone, our goal was met.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We have made this into an annual event and as word travels, we are being approached by other area agriculture resources. Our local Farm Bureau, local ag businesses and additional farmers have all expressed interest in the event. We keep expanding the number of stations and it just keeps growing!
